Fifteen year after the genocide in Rwanda (one million Tutsi and Hutu dead), the capital city Kigali is now modern and dynamic, with a population of one million: shops, banks and offices are being built at a sustained pace and the number of tourists is growing.
Yet, the Rwandan population living below the poverty threshold is estimated to reach 56%, i.e. around 5 million people.
The “Community House” built by Rwanda Avenir has relieved the isolation of genocide widows and helped their self-reconstruction.
The widows now wish to gain access to income generating activities and achieve economic stability.
The project supported by the PPR Foundation involves opening a restaurant at the Community House of genocide surviving widows in Kigali (Rwanda).
Profits from the restaurant business will be redistributed among the cooperative members, widows and young girls survivors of the genocide at Kimironko. The project further intends to provide guidance and assistance to the widows throughout their self-reconstruction process, by contributing to their social and economic reintegration in the context of the country's reconstruction and development.
The restaurant is located in the Community House built by Rwanda Avenir for the widows and managed jointly by a cooperative and a leading member of the Widows Group.
Activities :
- Completion of two restaurant dining rooms and the terrace, and furnishings.
- Completion of the kitchen and storage rooms, and furnishings
- Training in restaurant business and on-the-job training in restaurants and hotels in the area.
- Creation of a cooperative, and filing for required permits.
- Production of internal and external communication material.
- Opening of a Rwandan arts and crafts promotional stand.
At its 23 July 2009 meeting, the Foundation's Selection Committee decided to grant €15,000 to Rwanda Avenir's project. The grant is intended to fund vocational training in the restaurant trade for 25 genocide surviving widows, in the context of a restaurant to be opened at the Community House of Kimironko. quartier » de Kimironko
