In France, every two and a half days, a woman dies under the blows of her spouse or ex-spouse. The issue of domestic violence is particularly acute in the Seine-Saint-Denis district: statistics report 50 cases of marital violence for every 1,000 women and a 30% increase in just 4 years. La Sauvegarde in Seine-Saint-Denis has established a partnership with victims associations and the Observatory of Violence against Women to carry out joint initiatives focused on the protection of victims and guidance for perpetrators of violent acts. The Bobigny Court of Law has a high awareness on the issue of violence against women.
Participation in the responsibility and awareness help group is offered to perpetrators of marital violence (presumed or convicted offenders) subject to criminal proceedings. As an alternative to imprisonment, participation in the help group can take place before or after the court judgment.
The help group focuses on the prevention of domestic violence, and more specifically on:
- prevention of repeat offenses;
- recognition by the men of their responsibility in violent acts and in the deterioration of marital relationships;
- guidance to perpetrators for possible therapeutic care;
- consideration for the victims by the perpetrators;
- consideration for consequences on children.
Help groups hold weekly sessions, with a programme of seven 2-hour sessions. During a prior individual interview, the men commit to attend all group sessions which are moderated by a psychologist and a social worker.
Topics during the exchange sessions include:
• Search for the triggers to violence;
• Recollections of the initial love encounter;
• Values and representations of the roles of men and women: expectations, hopes, disappointments;
• Responsibility in marital conflicts; etc.
Help groups are conducted in the form of introspective exchanges and role playing.
On May, 24 2011, The Selection Committee decided to support the project and the workshops proposed to author of domestic violence in 2012 by a grant of €10,000.
The expected results consist in:
- Prevention of repeat offenses (75%);
- Recognition by the perpetrators of their responsibility in violent acts;
- Consideration for consequences of violence on the victims and on children;
- Access to therapeutic, health and social care.
